For the past couple weeks, I have had to unwillingly “chill out”. This is not something I do well. I recently had to drop out of a six day adventure race due to stomach issues. It was one of the hardest moments ever, but my body was screaming, “STOP!”

This week I’m on a beach trip with family in Delaware where we’ve been hanging out on the sand all day, every day, playing in the waves, taking long walks, throwing Frisbees, and, for me, catching up on my reading. I have continued my rigid sunblock regimen, determined not to burn. But I’ve had one problem: my VERY white belly.

The nonprofit group Beyond Pesticides warns that some 60 percent of pesticides used today have been shown to affect the thyroid gland’s production of T3 and T4 hormones. Commercially available insecticides and fungicides have also been implicated. Women are most at risk.
