How far would you venture to inspire others to live active, healthy lifestyles?
Marine biologist Nancy Caruso would travel across the country. She is journeying from Pittsburgh to Oregon—by boat—to inspire Americans to “eat right and move more.”
Nancy normally encourages creativity and the discovery of science in classroom settings through Get Inspired, the nonprofit she founded to inspire passion and purpose through arts and science. But she and her husband, Tom, are venturing into the outdoors this time to improve their own lifestyle.
“We love being outdoors, enjoying nature and eating healthy foods but like most people find, it’s often hard to do,” Nancy confessed. “We decided that we were going to do this trip to change our lives and maybe inspire others to do the same.”
This Saturday, she and Tom will begin retracing Lewis and Clark’s route across America, floating in a 25-foot fishing boat down the Ohio River, then the Mississippi, and up the Missouri River before portaging over the Rocky Mountains and dropping into the Snake River, finally landing in Oregon via the Columbia River.
Nancy’s grandpa, who traveled the same course in 1973, largely inspired the couple’s journey. “My grandfather lived to be 96 years old, and I never remember him being sick. He was always moving: walking, building tree houses, dancing, working on his house.”
The trip should take about three months, and, in that time, they hope to collect pledges from 10,000 people who aim to move more and eat healthily. Help Nancy toward her goal of inspiring 10,000 people and make your own pledge.
