This past weekend I headed to Moab, Utah, with a group of friends for a weekend of mountain biking. I hadn’t been in years, so it was fun to revisit some old trails as well as ride some new ones. I dreaded the six-hour drive from Boulder, but once we were there, that was just a blur.
I’m not fond of long car rides, but sometimes I just need to suck it up, hop in a car, and drive (or let someone else drive and be a passenger). I’m lucky to live in a part of the country where I have access to amazing natural wonders, such as Moab, within driving distance. People from around the world are itching to get there. And they were there. I ordered coffee next to an Italian man and helped him figure out U.S. coins. We parked next to an RV filled with a group of young French men on a guys trip. I’m sure there were many other nationalities represented.
In the U.S., we aren’t as generous as other countries when it comes to vacation time overall. I know there are some amazing U.S. companies that are quite generous, but they are few and far between. So we have to be selective in how we take our time off. That’s why I love to get away for a long weekend, taking off Friday morning in time to enjoy a few hours at my destination, and then take all of Saturday and much of Sunday to explore and play. Just those few days often give me just the break I need to escape my computer and relax and rejuvenate.
In Moab, I rode the famous Slickrock Trail at sunset on Friday. On Saturday, our group rode in an area called the Sovereign Trails over crazy formations of sand and rock. Then on Sunday, we rallied and got up early to catch a shuttle that took us 20 miles up and outside of town so that we could ride down 20-plus miles of the also-famous Porcupine Rim Trail. Every ride was spectacular and exhilarating.
But now I’m itching for more. I’m already staring at the calendar to figure out where I can go next. New Mexico? Arizona? Rocky Mountain National Park? The list is seemingly endless, which is a very good thing.
What fun fall trips do you have planned?
