This is what I inherited from my mother: blue eyes, flawless body surfing technique, and a penchant for worrying about things outside of my control.
This is what is not part of my genetic mold: hang-ups about my body, a fear of unrecognizable foods, or a disdain for sweat.

I am, I realize now, incredibly lucky in what was passed down to me. Like it or not, we learn a lot about body image, eating, exercise, and self respect from how our mothers behave. Kids soak up everything. Even Michelle Obama has been trying to change the example she sets for her daughters.
Today is not only Mothers Day, it’s also the beginning of National Women’s Health Week . The surgeon general is encouraging ladies to evaluate their physical and mental well being, and to take steps to keep themselves healthy.
It’s not a coincidence that the two events are happening together. We subconsciously take to heart what our mothers do, especially in terms of health and fitness.
My mother—star (over 55) soccer player, adventurous traveler, kayaker—has had a huge impact on me. Has yours?
