WAm reader, Debbie Todd, shares her experience at the Trek Women’s Triathlon in Orlando Florida. The Trek Triathlon Series and its sister event, the Danskin Triathlon take place in various locations throughout the summer and fall each year.
I participated in the Trek Women’s Triathlon on September 10th which isn’t really that unusual since I have been doing triathlons since 1983. I still remember my first triathlon back in 1983 there were 16 athletes, 15 guys and me the lone female.
However, the Trek Women’s Triathlon and its sister Danskin are for women only and what fun we all had. Training for this race is easy because the distances are short ½ mile swim, 12 mile bike and a 5k. So nothing fancy and believe me out on the race course you see everything from tri-bikes to beach cruisers and from runners to walkers. You also see everyone have a fun race.
The race venue is in Orlando; in and around Ft. Wilderness at Disney World which is a lot of fun for families. We were camping for the weekend at Ft. Wilderness which made it convenient to get around. My training partner and I were competing as individuals but our training group also had 2 relay teams and several others competing as individuals.
We all hung around the finish area cheering everyone in to the finish and once everyone was in and accounted for we headed back to our campsite for the pitch-in after party. There were athletes and coaches alike and when we took the final head count there were over 20 of us partying well into the afternoon. Of course we were re-living every part of everybody’s race.
