The Girl’s Cup

World cup fever has hit hard at my house. I even got up extra early Friday morning to catch the beginning of the Mexico v. South Africa game before work. Even though I’m a less than causal soccer fan most of the time there’s something about international competition that gets me fired up.

There are also two groups of girls, in L.A. and Soweto, South Africa, who have a reason to be particularly excited about the World Cup. Through Global Girl Media, a non-profit group, they’ll be covering the games through live blogging, video broadcasts and more. Global Girl Media gives the budding reporters—who tend to come from underserved backgrounds—resources, access to multimedia and video equipment, and a platform to share their stories.

Through the World Cup they’ll also report on stories that don’t see as much coverage in the national sports-centric media, like girls in sports, reproductive rights and career options for women in developing countries.

At halftime you can check out what they’re coming up with here.
