I have always loved to read. Some of my fondest memories growing up are of sitting by the woodstove in winter, curled up on the couch under a blanket, and burying myself in the pages of a good book. Early favorites were “The Secret Garden” and “A Little Princess.” I also tore my way through all of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books like “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings.” I loved losing myself in those fantasy worlds.
Here at Women’s Adventure, we have a gaggle of voracious readers who are on the lookout for that next fun or insightful read. So we’ve started a book club—and we want you to join!
Our first book is “3 MPH” by Polly Letofsky who, 10 years ago, decided to walk around the world. She traveled 14,124 miles through 22 countries… and it took her five years to complete. The book won Best Memoir at the 2011 IPPY Book Awards and is a powerful story 10 years after the trauma of 9/11. Here’s a synopsis:
On August 1, 1999, Polly Letofsky left her home in Vail, Colorado, and headed west. She traveled across 4 continents, 22 countries, and over 14,000 miles—by foot—to become the first woman to walk around the world. As an awareness campaign for breast cancer, survivors and well-wishers around the world came to walk with her. Every day strangers welcomed her into their homes and shared meals. The world had embraced her. But in the middle of Polly’s five-year journey, the world suddenly shifted on its axis when September 11 flung us all into a crossroads in world history. Polly suddenly found herself embedded in a vastly changing world and realized she could never retrace her steps home—they’d vanished in a tide of world events.
We would love for Women’s Adventure readers to join us in reading “3 MPH” and share comments and thoughts on the story. We will feature some of these in our Spring 2012 issue.
So order a copy of “3 MPH” today at Polly’s website, give it a read, and share your comments by December 16. Post them on our new Facebook book club group or email to rebecca@womensadventuremagazine.com. Maybe you’ll be quoted in our Spring issue!
We would also love to hear your suggestions on future books to read written by and about inspiring women, so please send ideas. Look forward to having you join the club!

Love the idea. My :”friend” bookclub is one of the best evenings of my month. Looking forward to reading and discussing with such a diverse group of women!
How do we “join”…..or do we just email when we’ve read the book?
Let’s get together to talk about the books – maybe make a Facebook group, Rebecca? Someplace we can post our thoughts when we’re finished.
This is great – I also found you can get her book on amazon.com as a kindle book

I love the idea too! Who wouldn’t want to be motivated with every read?!
I just saw this post and would love to join the group. Are you still reading “3 MPH” or have you finished and moved on to another?
We’ve moved on the Jennifer Pharr Davis’ book Becoming Odyssa.
