About Trips for Kids
Trips for Kids (www.tripsforkids.org) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization based in Marin County, California. With 60-plus chapters operating in the United States, Canada and Israel, Trips for Kids opens the world of cycling to at-risk youth through mountain bike rides and Earn-A-Bike programs. Fueled by success in the San Francisco Bay Area, the national organization was launched in 1999 with the expanded mission to open as many chapters as possible in order to provide kids with lessons in personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills and the simple act of having fun through mountain biking.

Women’s Ski Jumping Possible Event at 2010 Olympic Games

Boulder, Colorado, December 30, 2008 – With the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia only a year away, an April 20 court date may decide whether women athletes will be permitted to compete in the ski jumping event. Kristin Bjornsen in the January/February 2009 edition of Women’s Adventure provides updates on the court case and the growth of women’s ski jumping in the United States and worldwide.

A May 2006 decision by the International Olympic Committee appeared to keep women from competing in the February 2010 Games. Although 89 elite women jumpers from 14 countries competed in the international-level Continental Cup during the 2006-07 season, the ICC claimed women’s ski jumping had too few competitors, too few competing countries and too little international competition. Women’ski jumpers like Utah’s Lindsey Van disagree with the IOC’s decision, as does Deedee Corradini, the president of Women’s Ski Jumping USA, a nonprofit group organized to support jumping. “It’s clearly discrimination to keep women jumpers out of the Olympics, “said Corradini, a former Salt Lake City mayor.

The 2008 gender discrimination lawsuit against the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee claims that since government funds and public equipment are used to host the Games, the event must provide equal opportunities for men and women. A Canadian law firm is handling the case pro bono.

Women’s ski jumping also will receive a major boost in public visibility with the first World Championship, to be held in the Czech Republic this February. The event will be closely watched by the IOC and by the International Ski Federation, which sanctioned the championship. Provided the competitors demonstrate world-class jumping skills, and the event organizers promote the event to the public, the IOC may be more willing to allow women to jump in the Olympic Games.

In the United States, the sport is growing. Having been added to the US Ski Team for the 2005-06 ski season, women’ski jumpers receive support and structure from the team. At present, only women’ski jumpers are members of the US Ski Team, since the top American male jumpers retired in 2006.

The January/February 2009 edition of Women’s Adventure is on sale at newsstands and specialty stores nationwide beginning January 12. For further information about women’s ski jumping in the United States, visit Women’s Ski Jumping USA.
