Our nonprofit partner, the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation, teamed up with La Sportiva to bring you the new HERA Helios women’s mountain running shoe. La Sportiva will donate $10 from the online sale of every pair of HERA Helios to the national foundation, which works to stop the loss of women to ovarian cancer.
The minimalist HERA Helios ($120) is touted as a highly breathable and neutral trail running shoe suitable for light road use, too. It’s designed for comfort and adapts well to the terrain, while also looking great in an energetic teal hue.
“We are honored that La Sportiva created a shoe to benefit HERA and help raise awareness of ovarian cancer,” said Meg Steitz, executive director for HERA. “Ovarian cancer is a very serious but widely under-recognized threat to women’s health. We hope to change that by building awareness of the disease and funding research to make strides in early detection, treatment and prevention. By purchasing the HERA Helios, anyone can help us toward that goal and get an exceptional, top-notch pair of shoes.”
More about ovarian cancer and the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation:
HERA: Health, Empowerment, Research, and Awareness.
According to the American Cancer Society, one in 71 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her lifetime. In 2012, about 22,280 women received a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer and about 15,500 women died from the disease. With early detection, about 94 percent will survive longer than five years after diagnosis; however, only 15 percent of ovarian cancer is currently caught early. It ranks fifth as the cause of cancer deaths in women and accounts for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.
Of the funds raised through sales of La Sportiva’s HERA Helios, HERA’s Climb4Life events, and other initiatives, 88 percent provides for HERA’s programs such as its scientific research and community grants, as well as other education and awareness initiatives for ovarian cancer.
