We ran across a new product at the cycling trade show, Interbike, in September. “Skins” are compression wear from Australia that claim to improve power and performance, reduce muscle soreness, and help recovery with “BioAcceleration Technologyâ„¢.”
I asked to try out a pair of their long tights and, after submitting my height and weight (Skins are sized on Body Mass Index), received a very attractive pair of tiny black tights with aqua stitching along the seams. After an experience akin to squeezing toothpaste back into a tube, I had them on and felt, well, compressed. And energetic. My stomach hasn’t been that flat since sixth grade. I think I like these things!

But the proof still lay out on the open road, so I saddled up and rode hard for about three hours, trying to make my legs sore. While I was riding, I did notice the absence of any leg fatigue, but this could just be because of good sports nutrition or having a good day. I arrived home and left my Skins on for a while, probably about 90 minutes, doing various chores. I usually like to relax after working that hard, but I had no trouble jumping straight into doing other stuff.
The big giveaway was when I took the Skins off - there was an immediate lessening of leg energy. Whoa! I’m really impressed with the way the Skins made my legs feel during my ride and what an effect they had on me after my workout was over. There was no muscle tightness or soreness, although I could tell that I had worked harder. Hmm….so that’s why superheros wear tights.
Skins are available in several categories: sport, travel & recovery, snow, outdoor (camo!) and women’s She. You’ll find a dealer locator at www.skins.net
