An action-packed day outdoors in winter often starts with donning layer after layer of clothing and packing extra layers for the road, just in case. Then you work up a sweat on-trail and strip off those layers. They are too warm; their bulk inhibits movement; and they are now weighing down your pack. But it doesn’t have to be like that.

This is our first adventure race, and we are doing it together, for fun, and with no competitive intentions. We’re the only all-female team in the two-person open division. Our goals: Have fun and don’t finish DFL (dead effing last). But she is smoking me, and we are actually doing pretty well.

I’ve been riding mountain bikes for more than 20 years and have had my share of crashes. They come with the territory.
